Autumn Summit

The history of the Autumn Summit dates back  to 1984, when Morley Maier, Fred Nicholson, and Brian Jones acknowledged there was little opportunity for children to participate in long distance races. After many hours of planning, preparing, and organizing, the trio sent out the invite to Yorkdale, Bredenbury, MacNutt, Calder and Theodore for the First Annual Saltcoats Autumn Summit. The first race consisted of grades 7,8, and 9, where approximately 35 runners competed. With the first run being such a great success, the Yorkton Regional High School asked to participate in the run, adding to the numbers of what started out as a small race. The following year, Saltcoats School received phone calls from 30-40 schools asking if they were able to partake in the event. The answer was yes. As  the years went by, the amount of participants drastically increased. It wasn’t until about 15 years later when the number of runners stayed static, ranging from 800-900 children. The Autumn Summit is the largest Cross Country event in Saskatchewan and western Manitoba and is held each year on the last Friday of September. We look forward to many more years of successful Autumn Summit races.
